Multi Purpose Tools

Multi purpose tools is an umbrella term for any portable, handheld tool that combines several tools in to a single unit. They are most commonly made of stainless steel and are the size of a debit card but you can also purchase smaller ones on keychains or ones that can be carried securely in a wallet or purse. The most well know example is the Swiss army knife which contains a knife blade, a reamer, a bottle opener/screwdriver/wire stripper and a can opener/screw driver. Understandably, these tools are essential in many of the armed forces and are viewed as a key piece of equipment amongst hikers, survivalists and campers. Many versions of the multi tool have been adapted to ensure easy usage alongside ensuring they are safe; youth groups across the world encourage children to use them in wilderness settings and are even evaluated on their effective use of them in simulated survival situations, such as the scouts. Other versions have been developed for specific outdoor sports, such as fishing and hunting- there are even versions available for cyclists that contain bolt tighteners.

As previously indicated, such tools are considered essential amongst hikers, back packers and even survivalists, due to the wide arrange of tools available and the multiple uses for each tool in an emergency. The 3 most well know and used tools included in a multi tool are-

knife blade- useful for cutting wood, cutting twine, cutting bandages in the even of an injury, carving wood and also for helping shape materials in to implements that can collect rainwater in very desperate situations. In the event that you need to hunt, the knife blade can be used to hunt, clean and skin anything you catch. It is also useful for gutting fish. Depending on where you are in the world, it can also be used to defend you against hungry predator. Away from the wilderness, it is useful when doing DIY around your house such as opening containers, cutting carpet or to cut food.

can opener- when hiking through the wood, fewer things are more frustrating than taking a break, getting out a can and realising you have left your can opener at home. Though it is manual, the can opener included on a multitool is sturdy and essential when consuming tinned food outdoors. It is also useful indoors, especially if your electric tin opener has broken. The tip of the can opener also doubles up as a 3mm Philips head screwdriver.
screwdriver- an unexpected breaking of something is always a nuisance, particularly during a trek. The star shaped screwdriver (along with the additional usage of the can opener) provides an almost universal way to repair most household appliance or items you may take with you on a hike. Both screwdriver are essential, everyday tools which are handy to have in your pocket!

It is worth considering if you are purchasing your multitool to use as an emergency back up around the house or if you will be using it solely for outdoor activities, such as camping. Specific ones designed for outside often include saws, for cutting down thicker pieces of wood for fires or shelter, built in compasses and a specific surface that is more reflective than the rest of the tool for signalling. Some also contain fire starting flints which may prove priceless in a tough spot. As always, conduct your own research and pick the tool right for you!
