Cooking Equipment for Camping

One of the greatest joys of camping outdoors is the preparation and cooking of food around a campfire. It provides a very different experience from eating indoors due to the lack of a traditional kitchen and kitchen utensils. There is also the difference in the types of food being prepared; an individuals camping on a site, with a car and a supermarket ten minutes away is going to have a notably different type of food to a person who has been on a seven day hike. The equipment used by the people in both of these examples will vary too, not only from each other but also from utensils that a cook will have readily available in the standard kitchen.

The type of equipment used in cooking food outside will depend on what types of food you wish to consume along with how long you are going to be camping or hiking for. As mentioned earlier, you may be able to eat the stereotyped hotdogs and roasted marshmallows if your closest food outlets is a 10 minute drive from the campsite. If you are on a hike in the mountains however, you will be consuming food that is dense in carbohydrates and proteins, such as beans and flapjacks, to keep your energy levels high and to prevent fatigue.

So, it is important to pack the necessary cooking equipment with you when you are venturing outdoors, with the preparation of your food you will be consuming in mind. However, you may be unsure of what you will need to pack, as you may have never cooked food outdoors before, or you may be venturing in to a very different environment than the last time you took part in a hike.

Not to worry! Some of the basic parts you will need for cooking outdoors are listed below-

Portable/backpacking stove and fuel- designed to be used in remote locations, a backpacking stove is designed to be lightweight and typically consist of the burner, fuel tank and pot supports with the lightest stoves weighing about 2 ounces. You will also need to make sure you pack enough fuel (plus extra). If you don’t want to put your hand over a roaring fire to cook it, this is a must have piece of kit!

Pots- often made of lightweight aluminium, camping pots are useful to have to hand if you are going to be preparing soup, baked beans or boiling water for a well earned cup of tea at the end of your day trekking. Many have detachable handles, which make them easier to store and carry.

Frying pan- similar to the pots, camping frying pans are often smaller than those found in a traditional kitchen and are often made of aluminium with detachable handles. Great for an early morning fried breakfast!

Water bottles- packing a few extra bottles of water that you will be using to boil any potential food or drink is always a handy thing to have. Once used, you can pack utensils inside them to save on space for the walk home.

Utensils with a sharp knife- the use of forks and butter knives are an obvious addition to your cooking kit for the consumption of your food, but also remember to pack a sharper knife to help you prep foods such as meat or vegetables.

Matches- when buying matches for your outdoor adventure, it is best to be prepared for unpredictable weather. Therefore, investing in waterproof and weatherproof matches is the best option, as these will be able to light a stove, even in a torrential downpour. Also useful for lighting fires to dry wet clothes you may have.

These are just some of the basic pieces we recommend you take when you are planning to eat outdoors. Remember, if you are planning a longer trip to take a wider array of items with you as you will be consuming more food.
