Plenty here: a generous number of pockets including one on its shoulder strap and two on its hip belt. The side pockets are stretchy, secure and high with gaps on the sides to access them while on the move. There is a ‘floating’ lid to accommodate any over packing, and the load is tightened by its side compression straps. The pack comes with walking pole attachments and an ice pack, and the Stow-On-The-Go Osprey systems gets the pole attachments out of the way quickly when needed. 5/5

The Osprey Tempest 40 is available in two men’s sizes and just one size for women, but they both offer an adjustable back system with heavy-duty Velcro to secure it and avoid undue weight from being added. The hipbelt is flexible, lightly padded and sits well on various hip sizes. It also features nicely contoured shoulder straps that fit snugly without any chafing. It is easy to make tweaks to the top tension as well as other adjustment straps while on the go. 5/5

Shoulder strap and hipbelt cutaways save weight, decrease sweating and enable heat to escape. This is also helped by the raised mesh back panel on the AirScape, to keep the pack’s main weight off of your back, but still with a sufficient amount of stiffness to accommodate some inefficient packing. Also you are provided with excellent stability. 5/5

In use

This is a brilliant daypack for both winter and summer walks, with the Osprey Tempest 40 and can accommodate enough kit for overnight lightweight trips. The roomy lid pockets and stretchy front pockets store waterproofs. You can slot a hydration pack into the space between the bag’s body and back panel, so it can be refilled without having to unpack it. There are other packs with neater and sleeker silhouettes, but for most walkers that is a minor issue. 4/5

The light weight and features come at the lowest price in our test, which means it provides exceptional value for the money. 5/5

Final Verdict

This is a lightweight, well-featured pack, with enough features and space for year-round hillwalking. The Osprey Tempest 40 won both ‘Best in Test’ and ‘Best Value’ from Trail. 4.8/5
