Features

The most recent Petzl Nao+ offers 750 lumens (it used to be 575 lumens). When in its ‘Reactive Lighting’ mode the torch adjusts output automatically to suit the subject’s distance. When it is in its ‘Constant Lighting’ mode it has a 530 lumens maximum output and a 135 metre maximum beam. It burns at 120 lumens for 8 hours. The torch has a rechargeable battery, but 2 AAA batteries may be used instead. It has Bluetooth which and enables its power output to be adjusted by a phone app. 5/5

Design

There is a square knob on its side for switching between functions along with three high-power LEDs. Its head title precisely ratchets and remains in place. A rechargeable battery comes with the battery housing, but 2 AAA batteries can fit as well. It has a slightly messy headband cordable, but it works okay. However, the unit is bulkier compared to some others. 4/5

Comfort

Compared to some other torches, the Petzl Nao+ is bulkier and heavier, so you’ll notice it more on your head. However, it is stable, and the webbing and elasticated cords are secure and fairly comfortable. Lighter and smaller torches just offer more comfort. There is an extra power cable that is available, so that the battery pack can be worn on your wrist to make it more comfortable. It is perfectly acceptable, even if it isn’t the most comfortable. 4/5

In use

The torch has outstanding power for night navigation or running. For evenings its shorter battery life is okay; but there is an advantage to longer burn times for activities such as backpacking. Its ‘Reactive Lighting’ mode comes in handy. The torch’s Bluetooth connection allows you to install a free app onto your phone for adjusting the settings. However, the Petzl Nao+ will take up more room inside your pack compared to some others. 5/5

Value

This torch is full of features and power, but the Petzl Nao+ does cost more and it isn’t necessary for camping and general hillwalking. 3/5

Final Verdict

For night navigation and running, the Petl Nao+ is excellent, but lighter and lower-priced torches are ideal for a majority of walkers. It won the ‘approved’ accolade from Trail. 4.2/5
