What Are The Salient Features?

The Vaude Brenta is available in two different versions, the 40 L (here it is being tested) and 50 L variety. To separate the backpack from the user’s back, facilitating airflow and reducing the level of perspiration around this area, it comes with an Aeroflex back system. In addition to a snow lock extension and a rigid top cover, the pack also comes with a rain cover. It also features an outer zipped access and a main compartment with a zip-out partition at the base. Furthermore, the backpack has elastic front and side facing pockets. Score: 100%

How Good Is The Fit?

Although it only comes in a single back length, the Brenta’s fit on different users can be adjusted in a number of ways. It has adjustable should straps to vary this length; and an adjustable trampoline mesh which makes it possible for users to vary the fit on their back and with it, airflow. The pack’s broad hipbelt isn’t moulded to fit the body as well as other expensive alternatives. The Maremma 32, which doesn’t have 40L or 50L versions, is the Brenta’s closest opponent. Score: 80%

How About Comfort?

For utmost comfort, the Brenta 40, similar to other trampoline variations allows a generous amount of airflow around the user’s back. The pack’s design is lacking in that the shoulder straps and hipbelt have less padding, are somewhat stiffer and don’t facilitate as much airflow as I would be comfortable with. Although packing heavier loads will not be as comfortable, it’s possible for owners to live with these shortcomings as the pack does not carry as much weight as some of its opponents do. Score: 80%

User Experience

Depending on the owner, the zip-out divider on the main compartment will definitely be quite useful when travelling through the night. The rigid top cover designed to prevent moisture from making its way into the main compartment also impressed me. The Brenta’s expansive elastic front pocket will definitely come in handy as far as packing jackets is concerned; the pockets on the sides are also quite practical. A rain cover is included, and another huge pocket is located on the rigid top (a great place to place your maps). Score: 100%

Does The Vaude Brenta 40 Represent Value?

Even with its lower capacity, as compared to its closest rivals, the pack is competitively priced. Score:100%

Final Thoughts

The Brenta 40 has all the characteristics of a great all-round hill-sack. Its closest, more expensive, rivals do not feature any substantial improvements. It already has the Trail’s Best Value award under its belt. Score: 92%
